Lois Lowry’s novel is about Jonas, played by Aussie actor Brenton Thwaites (“Maleficent”), a teen who, with his “best friends forever” (Odeya Rush, Cameron Monaghan) is about to graduate from childhood. They’re to be told what they’ll spend their lives doing, what they’re suitable for — everything from “Drone Pilot” to “Nurturer” (child care specialist). The Chief Elder (Meryl Streep) thanks each “for your childhood” in a big ceremony, and since they’re all medicated at the start of every day, nobody questions this. Everyone sees the world monochromatically — literally. “Sameness” rules their rules.

And Fremont ranks as the least stressed city out of 182 in the rankings, which I’m sure was a surprise to everyone, especially people who live in Fremont. Just ask anyone who lives there to picture Mission Boulevard in their head and I bet a blood vessel starts doing a little dance on their forehead. (San Francisco, by the way, came in at No. 124, slightly more stressed than Salt Lake City but not quite as overwrought as San Diego.). The rankings were based on four major areas: Work Stress, Financial Stress, Family Stress and Health and Safety Stress. Under those broad headings, the factors that seem to make the San Jose residents come off as calm and collected are that compared to the rest of the country, San Joseans get a lot of sleep, don’t work long hours (38 per week, according to the survey) and have a lot of job security.

The Billy Jones “Wildcat” Railroad celebrated its namesake on July 28 by unveiling its new “5 Spot” steam engine to an eager public. An estimated 2,000 people rode the rails that day. The 5 Spot was built to be the railroad’s primary engine for the next 100 years, entertaining generations of children who haven’t even been born. The Los Gatos-Saratoga Magic 10B girls softball team had a magical summer, winning six straight tournaments and posting a 37-4 season.
