As I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s San Francisco, and feminism/radicalism was on the rise, it became very difficult for me to understand why I couldn’t be a woman in my own way, embracing all aspects of being female while also wanting to feel empowered. I was the youngest of seven in an immigrant family who was taught to cook, sew, clean, respect authority, but I was also taught to work hard, play hard and not ever succumb to oppression. I learned to truly enjoy all that was considered “womanly work”– I made all my own clothes from the time I was 10, looked forward to helping my mother in the kitchen, and had (and still do have) major OCD about cleanliness. I also knew that I was physically “beautiful” and had a certain ability to attract male attention. I saw nothing wrong with any of these traits.

In 1988 the company’s new artistic director, Helgi Tomasson, introduced his own interpretation by resurrecting much of the venerated 1895 version by Marius Petipa/Lev Ivanov. In 2009 Tomasson overhauled the classic with the assistance of Broadway designer Jonathan Fensom and “modernized” the fairy tale.

Longtime Los Gatos resident Mike Wasserman was elected president of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. During his State of the County address, Wasserman pledged to promote county services to residents so “they can get the help they need from us.”. The Albright Way initiative qualified for the June ballot, giving voters the opportunity to decide if a developer should be allowed to build two 65-foot tall buildings and two 50-foot tall buildings. The General Plan limited building heights in the Albright area to 35 feet. Just before the June election the town council approved the taller building heights. Voters went on to approve them, too.
